Here at No1 we understand that exercise is key to both physical and mental health. During these challenging times and with the closure of gyms it’s becoming increasingly difficult to exercise, and find the motivation to do so.
Walking is probably the most underestimated form of exercise. Exercise isn’t always about how many calories we burn, how sweaty we get and how much weight we can lift. Exercise should improve us both physically and mentally; and should be something we enjoy to do.
Studies have shown that people who follow a daily walking programme can have significant improvements in blood pressure, resting heart rate and reduced cholesterol.
While the physical benefits of all forms of exercise are notable; the mental boost can be more immediate. Psychologists studying basic forms of exercise have shown that just a 10 minute outdoor walk may be as good as a 45 minute workout when it comes to relieving the symptoms of anxiety and boosting mood.
Walking can also be a better option for those with injuries and pain. It is a lower impact form of exercise and can be done for longer periods of time.
